Scott Forstall took stage at the iPhone media event at the company’s Cupertino headquarters on Tuesday, after Tim Cook kicked-off the event. Forstall, who is Apple’s senior vice president of iOS software, has announced that its latest mobile OS, iOS 5, will be released on Oct. 12.

The new OS will run on the iPhone 5, iPads and the iPhone 4 as well. Forstall said that Apple’s App Store has been filled with more than 500,000 apps. A total of 140,000 of these apps have been built specifically for the iPad.

Forstall revealed that customers from around the world are downloading apps at a clip of more than 1 billion every month.

The features of the new operating system were also reviewed by Forstall. He just summarized what we covered at Apple’s iOS 5 event in June.

But he has mentioned a new app called Cards. It will let users create paper printed cards from an iPhone or iPad. The cards which are sent from the Cards app are marked with a postal service barcode. Thanks to this the sender would get a text message when the card arrives.

Stay tuned for updates.
