Access eBay on Your Mobile

September 30, 2011, By Christian Cawley

Accessing eBay is typically done via a desktop or laptop computer, but have you ever considered accessing the popular online auction marketplace via your mobile phone?

After all, auctions are available all day long, so it makes sense that you should want to access them wherever you are. Many organizations block access to sites such as eBay, which means that the best alternative is to access the service via your mobile phone.

We all know that mobile browsers are a little tricky and often reluctant to allow access to check boxes and search fields, so the sensible option is to use a mobile app to access eBay…

EBay for Android

Available from the Android Market, the Official eBay Android App is free, and offers a variety of cool features. Along with the expected ability to search and bid on listings, this app also offers the chance to create your own listings.

The result is that you could be sitting on the train home with some items you just bought from a big city store, decide that something you bought is unsuitable and quickly snap it on your phone’s camera before creating an eBay listing and uploading the photograph!

EBay for iPhone

iPhone users also get the benefit of selling items via the eBay app, and you can even share listings with social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Better still, along with the usual searching, bidding and purchasing, you can use the app’s barcode scanner to compare prices for items and create automatic listings!

As time saving apps go, the functionality of the eBay for iPhone app is considerable, and if you don’t have it installed on your phone (or iPad) already you should certainly have it installed by the time you get to the end of this article.

EBay for Windows Phone

With slightly less functionality is the eBay for Windows Phone app, which doesn’t currently allow you to create and edit listings. What it will do, however, is provide full details of all open auctions and allow you to bid on them at your leisure.

This app also provides push notifications, allowing you to find out when you have been outbid, if you have won an item or if someone has messaged you, and the latest version of the app for Mango (Windows Phone 7.5) has a barcode scanner, allowing you to quickly find the items you are looking for!

Other Mobile Options

Whether you use BlackBerry or have a feature phone, there are still mobile options for you. You can’t sell via the BlackBerry or mobile web version for other phones, but plenty of work has gone into making the service fully browsable and enabling users to find items, bid on them and even make purchases.

All in all, there are plenty of mobile options for eBay, regardless of what platform you’re using. If you need to get online and check an auction or make a bid, head to your mobile phone marketplace and download the free eBay app today!
