Cancelled Avengers Game Still A Possibility? Pre-Alpha Footage Shows Great Potential

September 20, 2011, By Christian Davis

Lack luster, waste of time, awful, bad controls, terrible graphics, and a whole slue of other words should come to mind when game based movies are said to be in development. There honestly aren’t many good ones with the exception of Chronicles of Riddick and Wolverine Origins (yes, the game was actually really fun). It’s something that the game industry just can’t seem to get a good grasp on and movies based on videogames are even worse. With the Avengers coming out next summer, it was obvious that a game would be in development. We’ve already had Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man videogames appear on our consoles; none of which received good reviews and all were released around the same time as their big screen counterparts. Surely a game consisting of all three characters and the Hulk won’t be any good right? Well, you know what they say about those who assume…

Rarely do you see a superhero game look this good and especially one that’s in first person and still in it’s pre-alpha development stage. A first person Avengers titles does sound odd and maybe that’s what we needed? Something completely different and not a top down brawler in the same fashion as Activision’s Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. It has this Mirrors Edge feel to it and just from the video (shown below) you can tell that each character controls so differently. The game was cancelled due to THQ Australia and Blue Tongue Entertainment being closed, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Gamespot received word that the rights of the game are now back in the hands of Marvel:

“The rights for a video game based on Marvel’s Avengers IP have reverted back to Marvel,” a Marvel spokesperson told them, adding, “The company is in early stages of exploring potential publishing and licensing opportunities.”

I’m definitely keeping my fingers crossed for this game to come back. It’s a shame to see something with so much potential, get thrown in the trash. Check out the pre-alpha gameplay below and let us know what you think in the comments.
