Netflix Adding Game Rentals

September 19, 2011, By Christian Davis

Bad mouthing Netflix has been a habit for a lot of people lately, especially with their recent raise in price (due to their streaming and physical DVD rental splitting ) and their separation from their content provider, Starz. With all of that being overwhelmingly negative to most, the company had an idea that could make a lot of people happy: Game rentals. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced that it’s mail division of the company would now be called “Qwikster” and will include Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii rentals as an upgrade choice; similar to the Blu-Ray upgrade.

Qwikster will launch in a few weeks and will function as a completely separate entity from Netflix. Which is somewhat odd because now you’ll need two separate accounts and more importantly, two separate bills.  So those who want game and  physical DVD rentals must use Qwikster, and those who just want the online streaming service will continue to use Netflix. Sounds like a hassle when reading it but Hastings says that users are already doing this.

The obvious question is whether or not this new service will over take the already popular Gamefly. Hard to tell now but with so many users having Netflix and preferring to have the online streaming, it’s not looking too good. We’ll see what happens.

What do you think of the new service? Let us know in the comments.
