Blizzard DOTA Receives Massive Overhauls

August 22, 2011, By Christian Davis

The Starcraft 2 Defense of the Ancients mod is going to be completely revamped according to Eurogamer. Blizzard DOTA  Senior Game Designer Johnny Ebbert said that the title has been “flattened.” What they showed at last years Blizzcon will not be what we see for the finished product. It has been “completely rebooted.”

Blizzard DOTA is one of four Starcraft 2 Mods and DOTA is specifically being released around the time the first title’s expansion, Hear of the Swarm, is being released.

“One of the important things to note with that space is the DOTA everyone plays onWarcraft 3 is not particularly accessible to the novice,” said Blizzard Product Development and Co-Founder Frank Pearce. “One of the game development philosophies we have at Blizzard is: easy to learn and difficult to master. That mod forWarcraft 3 doesn’t really fit that description.”

For anyone who has played some of the insanely popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) titles such as League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, or the classic DOTA know that it’s not user friendly at all. Blizzard is making a wise choice with this design decision.

Who can recall their first time playing a MOBA title? Let us know in the comments below. I know for a fact that it was a very hard hill to climb and even now, I’m still not very good at those types of games.
