The Sound And Art Of RAGE

August 11, 2011, By Christian Davis

The sixth installment for RAGE’s behind the scenes series has us hear a word from the hard working artists and sound engineers that are bringing this deadly, post-apocalyptic wasteland to our homes. The world is dirty, barren, dry, and deadly but it’s also unbelievably beautiful and easily one of the best looking games of this year.

Sound in a game so story driven is more important than you might think. Everything from the feet walking in the dirt  to water dripping from decrepit pipes really have to be top notch in order to make a world believable. Gun sounds for example need to be of the highest quality because they’re heard for the entirety of the game. You’re always shooting or being shot at by someone and slacking on those could ruin the whole audio experience. Thankfully, that’s not the case here.

A game’s voice acting is even more important. You need the characters to feel alive and the best way to do that is to hire incredible actors. The first character you meet in RAGE is Dan Hagar. He will be voiced by the talented John Goodman primarily because his character design reminded audio lead Christian Antkow of  John Goodman’s character from The Big Lebowski, Walter Sobchak. It’s great when some of Hollywood’s best talent lend a hand to the videogames that are becoming more and more like movies.

Check out the behind the scenes video below and let us know what you think of RAGE. This post apocalyptic shooter is set to release on October 8th on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC.
