Nokia N9 MeeGo Smartphone Shuns UK Too; US Stays Flummoxed

August 11, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Oh no, Nokia! Not again! This isn’t at all fair! After leaving US fans crestfallen with the announcement that the new N9 MeeGo smartphone will not make it to the United States, the Finnish company is at it again. The latest we hear is that the N9 is not making it to the United Kingdom either!

Going by what we get to know, we have reasons to believe that the device is not going to see a launch in two of the largest potential markets. When we posted the news on N9 not coming stateside, we had Arthur, an esteemed reader of our site, write to us thus:

“This would be the first Nokia phone that I would actually be interested in and now they decide not to sell it, Nokia is totally crazy, or do our stupid carriers have something to do with it. I’ll be trying to get my hands on this no matter what, even if I have to import it from some other country. I sure don’t want any future Nokia phones with the crappy Windows Phone 7 on it. I had a phone with it once and it is a total disaster, even worse than Symbian. But MeeGo on Nokia N9 looks really sweet.”

We think that’s what thousands of Americans feel. Now with the device being cancelled for the UK too, we can see similar anger pouring in.

But why? That’s what we tend to ask strategists at Nokia. If you would remember, the customers in the UK had been an enthusiastic lot and had been anticipating the smartphone.

Nokia UK seems to think otherwise. The company is looking at a market-by-market approach when it comes to selling the device. Here’s what they feel:

“As an organization, Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout and each country decides which products to introduce from those available. These decisions are based on a local assessment of existing and upcoming products that make up Nokia’s product portfolio and are intended to provide the best local portfolio for the UK market. Although we are delighted with the very positive reception that the Nokia N9 has received, here in the UK there are no plans to offer the Nokia N9 at present.”

Looks like its just Windows Phone 7 OS in Nokia’s minds now as far as the US and the UK are concerned. We might get to see the Finnish phone maker aggressively stepping on the gas so as to push WP7 and could make the it their flagship OS.

Let’s wait to know. In the meanwhile, we wonder what Nokia would do to pacify the US and the UK.
