Nokia N9 MeeGo Smartphone in Europe Next Month; Countdown Begins

August 5, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

In another 48 days, chances are you can be lucky enough to own an awesome device from the Nokia stables. We hear the Finnish phone company will see the new N9 smartphone roll out of their labs and head for the carriers.

If you head for Nokia’s Swedish page, you will know what we mean. Though a launch date in September was already hinted at by carrier networks already, it is only now that the company has come out with a confirmation.

We are still looking to know whether the phone will have a simultaneous launch in other markets too. Going by what the Swedish office of Nokia says, we tend to think that the phone will first come to Europe.

Nokia fans in the US could be in for some a disappointment as the company had earlier suggested that the phone may not make it officially available stateside at all.

That could mean the MeeGo device will be Europe specific. The phone sports penta-band 3G, but could be seen as fully supporting AT&T and T-Mobile in the US as well as most Canadian carriers. We are just wondering why the device can’t come to these regions too.

With the Windows Phone foray already being worked on, the MeeGo device is probably seen as a mismatch for the US and Canadian markets by the players involved.

So, for now it’s just Europe in our mind. Customers in the region will get to play with the N9 that comes with some alluring features in just about a month-and-a-half.

The specs that keep us glued on to the Nokia Swedish page include a 3.9-inch curved AMOLED screen, a blazing 8 megapixel camera, and Nokia’s first real NFC support in a smartphone.

A closer look will reveal that this one could be Nokia’s most advanced phone and it comes with a unique button-free, real multitasking interface. The company is expected to offer the device in two versions – of 16GB and 64GB of storage respectively.

Europe, are you ready?
