Windows Phone 7 Tips & Tricks: Contact Management

August 4, 2011, By Christian Cawley

One of the most important tasks that you will have to deal with on your Windows Phone is the sorting of contacts, either importing them from another phone, bringing them into the People Hub via a social networking service or adding them manually.

After they have been added, duplicate contacts can be merged and if your list of contacts is particularly long there are various methods you can use to find them on your phone, from search functions to shortcuts.

Windows Phone 7 Tips & Tricks: Contact Management

Importing Contacts a SIM Card

One thing that you might be very interested in doing early on – especially if your new Windows Phone is a replacement for an older phone – is to import contacts from a SIM card. This will enable you to add your first contacts to your Windows Phone, and is easily done via the People Hub. Simply tap and hold the top of the screen and select Settings > Import SIM contacts.

Adding contacts manually, meanwhile, is a case of opening People and tapping the + symbol at the top of the screen. You can then add a name, phone number, email address (and many other pieces of information via the Other option) and even a photo; remember to tap Save when you’re done!

You Can Include Facebook Friends as Contacts!

With Facebook integration in Windows Phone 7 you will find that your Facebook friends are all automatically added to your contacts. This might not be to everyone’s taste, but you can easily drop the ones you don’t want (i.e., those that you didn’t have in your contacts already).

This is done via Settings > Applications > People and selecting Only add Facebook information to existing contacts.

Finding a Contact

When you open the People Hub you will be presented with a long list of contacts, sorted alphabetically. There are different ways of jumping through this list. For instance, you might simply scroll through it with your thumb, although with a lot of contacts this can take a while.

Alternatively, you can tap the Search button at the top of the screen or on your handset to enter the name of the person you’re looking for.

Best still, however, is tapping the letter on the left-hand side of the contacts list, which displays an alphabetic grid which you can use to jump to contacts beginning with a certain letter!

To easily find a contact that you regularly open, tap and hold their entry in your contacts list and select Pin to start, adding them to your Start screen.

Merging Contacts

It isn’t uncommon to find that you have several contacts for the same people, especially if you have been using a phone for several years. After all, people change their mobile phone numbers and email addresses quite regularly.

Fortunately, Windows Phone 7 offers a link function so that all duplicate contacts are bundled together and displayed as a single item. Better still, it can automatically perform this task, but if it should miss any, all you need to do is open the People Hub, select a contact, press the Link button (a “chain” icon) at the bottom of the screen and select the contact to merge with.
