Before You Bad Mouth Call of Duty, Listen to What Doom Creator John Carmack Has To Say

July 19, 2011, By Christian Davis

Some of you younger gamers may not know who John Carmack is. The id Software Co-Founder helped create world renown shooters such as Doom and Quake. Safe to say he knows a thing or two about shooters.

As long as people are buying it, it means they’re enjoying it,” he said. “If they buy the next Call of Duty, it’s because they loved the last one and they want more of it. So I am pretty down on people who take the sort of creative auteurs’ perspective. It’s like ‘Oh, we’re not being creative.’ But we’re creating value for people – that’s our job! It’s not to do something that nobody’s ever seen before. It’s to do something that people love so much they’re willing to give us money for.”

“It’s almost as if it’s popular, it’s not good. And that’s just not true.”

Both fans and developers have been seen as “snooty” in Carmacks eyes and that’s not too far from the truth. Gears of War creator said something along the same lines when it came to Nintendo’s Wii U. Stating that “They’ll talk sh*t but they’ll buy it.”

Same with Call of Duty fans.
