Wii U Won’t Have DVD Or Blu Ray Playback; Comes With Social Media Functionality

June 15, 2011, By Christian Davis

Something we didn’t expect at all, the Wii U will not have DVD or BluRay playback. In a recent Investor Q&A, president Satoru Iwata flat out stated that the Wii U will not have either of those functionalities.

His reasoning for this does make sense though. Stating that “enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray.” It also reduces the cost of development as well.

One addition the Wii U does come with is social media. When the consoles online experience was brought up, much information wasn’t given, but Iwata stated that “we are no longer in a period where we cannot have any connection at all with social networking sites.”

He elaborated on the online experience and said that they’re going to have ways that will enable people who play games with each other, to share that information socially.

With all that said, he never brought up the companies troublesome online past. That should worry you.
