Unlocked iPhone 4 in the US; to be Available Starting Wednesday, Says Rumor

June 13, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Did you know US customers will be presented with an option of buying an unlocked iPhone 4? It’s true that Apple has quite a history of selling unlocked iPhones in countries where choice-based service is either popular or made compulsory by law. However, in this case, let’s check out how far the rumor can be true?

A tweet has also added that the unlocked iPhone 4 would appear at Apple stores in both capacities and colors available. The models would include – the MC603 (16 GB, Black) MC604 (16GB, White) MC 605 (32 GB, Black) and MC606 (32 GB, White). All these models have landed and are ready to be sold on U.S. shores.

However, these devices line up with the GSM versions sold abroad but lack the regional suffixes that are normally seen in international unlocked phones, such as B for Britain or C for Canada.

If the report is true and considering the fact that they would only work on GSM carriers, AT&T and T-Mobile will be gearing up to take charge. As a matter of fact, using the iPhone on T-Mobile offers only very limited options since it does not support 3G. That would mean AT&T can look at some lucky days ahead.

Unlocked iPhones are usually available in Canada and some European countries, but have never been sold in American Apple stores before. At the end of the day, the beneficiaries are the international travelers, who would preferably swap out their SIM and use their unlocked iPhone with local carriers in Europe and other places. What do you think?
