BlackBerry Playbook Update Rolling Out to Address Adobe Flash Issue

June 13, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

As you all know, the PlayBook from the BlackBerry stables was put on sale on the 19th of April in the US and is all ready to visit the UK on the 16th of this month. Everything was going well until Adobe earlier this week issued an update for Flash Player, which was reported as affecting all systems running Flash.

In such a milieu, BlackBerry is set to push an over the air update to their PlayBook, which would fix the issue. In fact, the update will be a new version of the BlackBerry Tablet OS. The update will feature an updated version of the Adobe Flash Player within it and hence there will be no need to download it manually.

However, BlackBerry has not confirmed the reports of the Adobe issue in Playbooks. Going by their blog, “While there are no known reports of any BlackBerry PlayBook users being affected by the Adobe Flash issue, we encourage all BlackBerry PlayBook users to update to this newest version of the BlackBerry Tablet OS”.

The update is designed and developed to fix the security issue found with Adobe Flash Player relating to cross-site scripting.

A look back at the past would suggest that so far the PlayBook was riding healthy. The only issue that ever rose was that said 1000 devices were found to be using faulty builds of the tablet OS.

Existing users will receive the update on their BlackBerry PlayBook status bar or you always have the option of checking for the software update in the settings menu at any time. New users will automatically receive the update v1.0.5.2342 as a setup process. What are your views?
