Microsoft Windows 8 Tablet in the Works?

June 9, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

It is a known fact that the dominance of Apple in the tablet market is so annoying for other players. Now, confirming the chances of more action as if to challenge this dominance, we hear that Microsoft has decided to take the fight to Apple’s court by rolling out their own tablet running on Windows 8 platform.

The rumor goes thus. Microsoft will possibly collaborate with Texas Instruments to design a tablet device powered by TI’s OMAP 4470 chip to put up a challenge to the dominance of iPad in the market. In all possibilities, the software giant will market their new Windows 8 tablet in almost the same way as they marketed Xbox 360 or Zune.

However, it is learnt that the company is not so confident about the project which is in its preliminary stage. So it is avoiding much fanfare about it, just in case it may have to scrap it on the way. Whatever that be, a venture into tablet hardware development will be, in no doubt, a serious challenge for the company.

Though successful in its software development attempts, Microsoft has tasted success very rarely in their hardware ventures. Zune media player, Kin smartphone and own brand TV all are historic examples of how Microsoft failed to steer their own brand hardware to success terrain. Xbox 360 is the only exception.
