Android Next OS Version Christened Ice Cream Sandwich; Confirmed By Google Staffer

Ever wondered about the strange names that Google comes up with for their Android OS?  If you haven’t, what do you say about an Ice Cream Sandwich nomenclature for Android 2.4? A Google employee working on the OS has confirmed the name while leaving a comment in the Android Issue Tracker.

Google always fixed their Android names on delicious desserts. They opened the series with a ‘Cupcake’, which was followed by the ‘Donut’. The second version saw ‘Eclair’, ‘Froyo’ and ‘Gingerbread’. An OS only for tablets, ‘Honeycomb’ came as the third version.

Now, we are at pause and for the naming series to continue, the next version should start with ‘I’. And can anyone think of a better name than the ‘Ice cream’?

Earlier,  Google had mentioned the same name in passing at the launch of Google Nexus S last month. Back in October, we also heard by ARM President Tudor Brown that the Android OS version would be named the same.

Of the very little data that we have on the next Android OS, the Android Issue Tracker had also stated that the version will come out with a bug fix.

We also had confirmation earlier that the next version of Android will merge features from both Gingerbread and Honeycomb.

The release of this ‘King of the desserts’ is expected in June or July.

Google has a legacy of showing their major Android updates at the Google I/O Conference. Hence, we hope to see the Android Ice Cream too this time around. That would be precisely after 6 days and 19 hours. See you there!
