Galaxy Tab 8.9-inch along with revamped 10.1-inch model from Samsung takes on Apple iPad 2: Specs & Features Detailed

March 22, 2011, By Shawn Wagnon

Images of Samsung’s latest 8.9-inch tablet along with a revamped 10.1-inch model have just hit the net along with detailed spec sheet. IT seems like Samsung has taken on the thinness challenge thrown down by Apple pretty seriously and is offering two tablets that are thinner than Apple iPad 2. Samsung is so smitten about shedding weight that they are offering both the 8.9-inch and the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab models at just 0.33-inch thickness. [corrected]

We all remember that iPad 2 was 0.34mm in thickness and that means Samsung has just got on a level playing field in this department with Apple. Of course, those who have played around with these prototypes say that they were not switched on and are not functional, but Sammy will obviously showcase that on launch, pretty soon.

The 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab weighs 1.31 pounds and the 8.9-inch model comes in at just 1.03 pounds. Here is what the specs and feature list of the 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab look like:

• Android™ 3.0 (Honeycomb) OS
• 8.9” WXGA 1280×800 display
• 1GHz Dual Core application processor
• 3.0-Mega Pixel Camera AF with LED Flash
• 2.0-Mega Pixel Camera Video
• 1080p Full HD Video @ 30fps playback with 720p HD Video recording
• Samsung TouchWiz UX
• Adobe Flash Player 10.2
• HSPA+ 21Mbps 850/900/1900/2100, EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900
• Sensor Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Digital Compass, Ambient Light sensor
• 230.9 x 157.8 x 8.6 mm in dimensions and 470g in weight
• 6000mAh battery

Now the big question will obviously be what the price tag will look like for the 8.9 Galaxy Tab. Unfortunately there is no information on that as of yet. But it will be available in Wi-Fi only 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions and Sammy promises a summer launch. Hopefully we will find out very soon if Samsung can match the $500 price tag of the basic iPad 2…
