Uploading and Downloading Movies from YouTube

March 9, 2011, By Christian Cawley

YouTube is one of the world’s most popular websites, hosting billions of user-submitted video clips that can be viewed on computers, phones and internet-capable TV sets. With a relaxed attitude to copyright and bending over backwards to permit censorship in certain countries, YouTube is an online home to many web users looking for music or clips from their favourite TV shows.

Using YouTube is easy – you simply visit the website, type in the search term and wait for the search results to deliver something that you want to watch. From movies about conspiracy theories to clips from video games, there is something for everyone on YouTube – and it is almost as easy to submit a video as it is to watch one.

To Upload, You Need an Account

In order to upload your video clips to YouTube, you will need to setup an account with the service, which can be done via www.youtube.com/create_account. Here you will need to submit your email address and create a username, and once this is submitted and accepted (you will get an email confirmation) you will be able to start uploading clips – click the Upload button to continue.

On the next screen, select Upload video. This will then give you the option to find the clip that you want to upload to YouTube on your computer – browse for the clip and then click OK to proceed. Once the upload process has completed, you will see a preview of the clip and a few optional forms fields to fill in, such as the Title:, Description:, Tags: and Category. Completing these fields will make it easier for your clip to be found in search results.

Note also that there are privacy options – rather than the recommended and default Public option, you might select Unlisted or Private, the latter of which is limited to specific users that you choose.

Once done you can Save changes or scroll down to upload another video. Note that the URL for your clip will be displayed so that you can start sharing it straightaway!

Download Videos from YouTube

Downloading video content from YouTube is another kettle of fish, however. You might choose to download a browser enhancement for Firefox or Internet Explorer, for instance, or you could use an online streaming video service such as KeepVid.com.

This last option is capable of downloading streaming videos from a wide variety of sites, not just YouTube, and is very easy to use.

First of all, hit up the KeepVid.com link in your browser. Next, open a new tab and find the YouTube video you want to download and copy the URL from the address bar – this will look something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abcdef1234. Switch back to the KeepVid.com tab and paste the link into the field labelled URL – then on the right of this, click Download. For your first run, the website will install a Java applet, so follow the instructions for this; a few seconds later a variety of download options will be provided!

KeepVid.com also provides a shortcut option – available at the top of the page, the KeepVid Bookmarklet should be dragged to your browser links/bookmarks toolbar, and can be clicked whenever you’re watching a video clip that you wish to download, without going to the trouble of copying and pasting URLs!
