Read Emails with K-9 Mail for Android

One of the main complaints levelled at the Android games platform is the relative inadequacy of the email client. While some mobile manufacturers have included their own email clients on devices, on the whole the platform suffers from a lack of a good quality tool for writing and reading emails.

There are of course alternatives on the Android Market, but on the whole these offer little more than the default tool, and some are also paid apps; no one pays for an email client in the second decade of the 21st century unless they’re buying it as part of an office suite or they’re easily fooled.

As such there is one other alternative – K-9 Mail, which is available from the Android Market, filed away in the Communication category. You can get started with this tool (which supports IMAP, POP3 and Exchange) by tapping Install and confirming with the OK button.

Using K-9 Mail for Android

With over 250,000 downloads to date and capable of handling push email, the addition of signatures and storing email on your SD card, K-9 Mail is a top choice and with the first run of the app you will be able to setup an email account.

There are two ways of doing this – you might enter your email account and password and hope for the best with the automatic setup (ideal for Google Mail accounts and other accounts hosted by popular webmail services, this usually works) or you might enter an email account and password and then hit the Manual button to setup the account from scratch, choosing from POP3, IMAP or Exchange (WebDAV) and adding your correct username, password, server details and finally giving the email account a name.

With K-9 email running you can send and receive, read and write emails from the convenience of your Android device – but better still, you will get the opportunity to enjoy some desktop-style functionality on your Android phone.

Writing Emails with K-9 and other Features

The first thing you will want to do with K-9 Mail for Android (after checking for any new messages) is to send an email. This is really easy to do – just press Menu > Compose and add the recipient’s email address, subject and the message. Attachments can be added via the Menu button, and you can also Add Cc/Bcc or Save as draft; the Send button can also be found via the Menu.

K-9 Email is full of useful features – in addition to a sensible and easy to use method for creating new emails, you can view messages in their own inboxes or in a Unified Inbox, available via the Accounts screen.

Also from this screen you can open the Menu to Search through your emails, Add accounts, Check mail (the instigation of the send/receive process) and edit various Settings.

The K-9 settings menu is comprehensive; font sizes and message previews can be configured in the Display screen, while the Interaction screen allows the use of Volume key navigation for browsing through emails. Considerable exploration of these screens would be required to find the options you’re looking for.
