SEGA Game Gear Classics for 3DS

March 3, 2011, By Christian Cawley

On of the top 16-bit games consoles was the SEGA Game Gear, a handheld with which you could enjoy Sonic the Hedgehog and many other games back in the 1990s. A fondly-remembered device (the games came on small cartridges) it was in direct competition with the Atari Lynx and both were forerunners to the PlayStation Portable.

Will Sonic the Hedgehog appear on Nintendo 3DS?

Which is why it is strange to see SEGA Game Gear Classics coming to the Nintendo 3DS, with hit Game Gear titles set  to be released in the Nintendo eShop for download to Nintendo 3DS consoles, which are of course set for release this month.

Announced during Nintendo’s keynote address at the Game Developers Conference, SEGA’s favorite classic games will be available almost straight away, and be among the first titles available from the eShop. Twenty years since the Game Gear system was released, SEGA are looking a the release as a great way to commemorate the occasion, not to mention generate some revenue – would be great if they could divert funds into developing their own handheld console once again!

SEGA plan five releases for the launch of the Nintendo eShop and plan a few more later in the year. with more to be announced later this year – you can find out more at www.sega.com.
