iPad 2 Launch Event: Apple takes on Android tablets, Keeps iPad 2 price the same

March 2, 2011, By Shawn Wagnon

Remember all the talk till yesterday about how Apple iPad was inferior to the likes of Motorola Xoom and hence the price of the Xoom was justified. Well, Apple have just launched the Apple iPad 2 and it looks stunning to say the very least. To top that off, they have kept the prices of the iPad 2 same as those of the iPad on launch. This means 5 out of 6 iPad 2 models are below the $799 mark and the basic iPad 2 will cost $499.

No matter what the Android tablet makers will tell from this point on is irrelevant to the casual consumer who just wants a tablet to sport. Here is Apple, the company renowned for gadgets with ‘cool factor’ and they are giving their latest tablet away for $499 only. That is good $100 cheaper than a 16GB Wi-Fi-only Xoom. Here is the price listing for different models of iPad 2 from Apple themselves:

The Wi-Fi + 3G versions are available on Verizon and AT&T for the same price and the 32GB Wi-Fi + 3G version of iPad 2 costs $729. That is good $80 less than Xoom in the same range. All the models will be available in Black and also White starting March 11th and the White models should be in demand, no doubt.

Seems like Apple has once again trumped competition in the price department and that is clearly going to make a huge difference in the tablet war. Steve Jobs & Co. have once again won another round in the battle. We will have to wait and see if this is the knockout punch…
