Unreal 3 Engine to Power NGP Games

In an announcement that is likely to get existing handheld gamers hot under the collar, Epic Games have revealed that the Unreal Engine 3 is available for Sony’s NGP (Next Generation Portable), the successor to the PlayStation Portable.

Unreal Engine 3 to power NGP games

Representing a key element of the development of many games for the platform, a real-time preview of a large, outdoor environment running on NGP was displayed at the PlayStation Meeting 2011 last month in Tokyo, which showed an amazing sweeping panorama full of particle systems, animating characters and atmospheric lighting effects.

A key element of the presentation, the NGP version of the Unreal Engine 3 has now been confirmed and made available for developers, allowing them to take advantage of the NGP’s multi-core GPU and shader-based, multi-core CPU.

Epic Games see NGP as a game changer for the portable gaming market – and when you line it up with its hot specs alongside the main competitors (Nintendo 3DS, iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7) then you can see why. NGP is way ahead of the field in terms of graphics, and while Nintendo will continue to do “their own thing” the mobile phone gaming platforms seem to be restricted to a PSP-like graphics existence with their current incarnations.

We’ll no doubt see NGP lead the way…
