Sharing Pictures with Windows Live Photo Gallery

February 23, 2011, By Christian Cawley

Available as part of the Windows Live Essentials 2011 suite of applications for Windows 7, Windows Live Photo Gallery is a great way to manage and edit photographs taken on digital camera or camera phone devices, or even those that you have scanned and saved to your PC.

Once you have edited your photos they can be shared and distributed in different ways, allowing you to take advantage of some popular online services such as Facebook and YouTube.

Following on from our recent look at editing photos and sending them via email, we’re going to take a look at how you can add sharing services and take advantage of those that are already provided.

Ways to Share with Windows Live Photo Gallery

By default Windows Live Photo Gallery provides 4 methods of sharing your gallery:

  • Windows Live Groups
  • Facebook
  • SkyDrive
  • YouTube

(Windows Live Photo Gallery also allows the management of video clips, hence the presence of YouTube in this list.)

In order to take advantage of these services, first browse your images for something that you want to upload. Once you’ve found the photo in question, hover your mouse pointer over it – you should see there is a small empty checkbox in the corner of the thumbnail. Fill the checkbox and then go to Home > Share and click the upload service that you want to use.

You will then be prompted to sign in or connect that upload service to Windows Live. For instance if you choose to upload to Facebook, you will need to choose Connect to Facebook and then Log in with your usual Facebook credentials in order to connect the two services. Once this has been done, the image should be uploaded.

A similar process is in place for uploading to YouTube, while uploading to the Windows Live SkyDrive is integrated into the software without any additional software being required.

If these ways of sharing aren’t enough for you, others are available…

Adding a New Sharing Service

If you would prefer to use a different sharing tool, there are several available plugins that can be downloaded and added to Windows Live Photo Gallery; one might allow you to add photos to TwitPic, while another might upload your photos to SmugMug.

In order to add a service, go to the Share section of the Home tab and use the arrow on the right of this to open the full list of options; select Add a plug-in and your default browser will open and take you to the Windows Live Plug-ins page – select Photo Gallery Plug-ins to proceed. All you then need to do is browse the list for the plugin you wish to add to the application and select Download now. When the download begins select Run and the plugin will be added to the application, which will need to be restarted before you can use the enhancement.
