GeoHot now has enough funds to combat Sony legally: Donations came in flying for the PS3 hacker

February 22, 2011, By Shawn Wagnon

It was just a couple of days ago that George Hotz put up an appeal to the online community, asking them to donate towards his legal battle against Sony. For those who have been living under a rock for the past month or so, Hotz managed to jailbreak the PS3 and subsequently Sony has dragged him to court for it. Now both parties are engulfed in a legal battle and on the net there is the hackers vs. Sony that is going on.

No matter which side of things you are on, many are starting to feel that things are getting a bit stupid now with both parties not yielding an inch. Hotz had put up an appeal asking for funds for his legal battle against Sony and seems like he has got in excess of $10k already and his lawyer has confirmed that all of this is genuine money.

Seems like the online community is firmly behind GeoHot and even the media to an extent is backing him. We did say the other day that this whole ‘PS3 hacking’ issue racked up the ‘right to ownership’ side of things. Sure there are some who will tell you that this is ruining the gaming experience of others and there will be those who will say Sony has no right to put the restrictions that it currently has in place.

Again, like in any sane issue, the truth probably lies somewhere in between. Sony might have wanted to make an example out of Hotz before others tinker with the PS3. But in their over-enthusiastic attempt bit off more than they realized. Seems like Hotz is no lightweight- at least as of now! The battle rages on…
