ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 Google Doodle: The cup that counts kicks off with India vs. Bangladesh

February 19, 2011, By Shawn Wagnon

Google have decided to spread the word on the start of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup with a new Doodle that looks pretty simple. Batsman looking to pull the ball and a left-handed one at that. Seems a bit too inspired by Baseball that shot! But despite that, we will take what has been offered as cricket’s ‘once in four years’ World Cup kicks off with the top 16 nations on the planet.

The competition kicked off today with the two co-hosts sparring in the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in the city of Dhaka. The cup already got off to a flying start with the much-anticipated India vs. Bangladesh contest as India piled on a mammoth 370 batting first. That was thanks to their top batsman Virender Sehwag scoring a blistering 175 to set the tournament alight.

The Google Doodle has become a bit of a tradition in the last year or so that is both endearing and apt. Sometimes it has celebrated carnivals across the globe and at others, it has reminded us of forgotten legends. The recent two Doodles before this were the Jules Verne Doodle and the Alva Edison Doodle. Of course, we are not counting the more famous Valentine’s Day Doodle.
