Vote in the GAME British Academy Video Games Awards

Like the OSCARs, the UK has its own movie awards ceremony, the BAFTAs – and hiding behind the back of this annual shindig are various sub-industry awards ceremonies.

Civilization V nominated in British Academy Video Awards

This week the British Academy of Film and Television announced the nominations for the GAME British Academy Video Games Awards, featuring 44 different game titles that have been recognized and are in with a change of being awarded for being popular, innovative and cutting0-edge.

Remarkably, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood leads the pack with seven nominations, while Call of Duty: Black Ops and Heavy Rain each garner six nominations – barely leaving any scraps on the table for any other games to pickup!

Meanwhile, Mass Effect 2 has picked up with five nominations while LIMBO and the frankly bonkers Super Mario Galaxy 2 have four each.

The award categories feature various key aspects of game production – for example, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Call of Duty: Black Ops are both nominated for Action, Artistic Achievement, Multiplayer, Technical Innovation, and Use of Audio.

Meanwhile, don’t think that it’s all about PCs and consoles. A new category is introduced for 2011 – the Social Network Game category features nominations for the popular Bejeweled Blitz, Farmerama, FIFA Superstars, My Empire, Zoo Mumba, and Zuma Blitz.

On the sidelines are titles such as Civilization V, Football Manager 2011, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Kinect Sports, Napoleon Total War, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, Toy Story 3 and many, many more. The newcomer BAFTA Ones To Watch Award in association with Dare to be Digital award nominations see a nod for Mush, Sculpty and Twang.

However most important is the publicly-voted category – the GAME Award of 2010. A shortlist for this was compiled by a panel of gaming journalists and enthusiasts, and voting is now live at www.baftagameaward.com.

Taking place on Wednesday 16th of March, the Awards will be streamed live at  http://go.ign.com/baftamicrosite, www.bafta.org and www.baftagameaward.com.
