February 14, 2011, By Shawn Wagnon

There have been so many rumors that have surrounded the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play for the past few months and so many denials that at this point we are just delighted that it went ‘official’. Sony pulled the cover off of the Xperia Play at MWC in Barcelona (again, officially) and with it we have got our first good look at the Xperia Play apart from all the leaks that happened before. Here is everything that you need to know about the Xperia Play.

Specs & Features:

This is basically a mobile that doubles up as a mobile gaming unit and the Xperia Play does not disappoint you in this regard. While you will only enjoy its true brilliance when you watch it in action close-up, the build up to its launch seems worth the hype. Here is what comes with the Xperia Play:

  • 4-inch multi-Touch LCD Display
  • 854 x 480 Resolution
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the inside
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor
  • Qualcomm Adreno 205 graphics
  • 5 hours, 35 minutes of battery life to last a single game session
  • GSM/CDMA Capabilities
  • 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED Flash
  • Timescape UI

That makes the Xperia Play one-of-a-kind on the planet when it comes amalgamating both gaming and mobile needs into one unit packed with plenty of power.

Release Date & Price:

The news out is that the Xperia Play will be out first in the US in March and will be available exclusively on Verizon Wireless. While the price on-contract of the mobile is not known, expect to get considerable rebate compared to outright purchase. Should be interesting to see what it would cost considering Verizon have an exclusive deal. So, wait till that March launch and you can place your orders!

Game titles on offer:

You will have preloaded PSone game that will be exclusive to Xperia Play along with various other Android titles currently on offer. That includes Asphalt 6, The Sims 3 and Tetris among many others. Sony has promised that a library of 50 titles will be available by the launch time and this will include games specially designed for Xperia Play by various publishers. So, you need not worry about lack of enough games on the Xperia Play.

Local Area Multiplayer gaming option is also at your disposal, so that you can join in the fun. In short, the Xperia Play offers plenty of “Play” and we are really looking forward to that March release date.

Stay tuned as we bring more from the happening Barcelona and Mobile World Congress 2011…
