Tegra 2 3D CPU to Power LG Optimus Pad?

January 24, 2011, By Christian Cawley

As leaks go this one is pretty tasty: the Nvidia Tegra 2 3D processor is set to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress next month, and available in portable hardware later in 2011!

Will the Nvidia Tegra 2 3D CPU power the LG Optimus Pad?

Thanks to a few presentation slides that have somehow made it out into the wilderness, we now know that the mobile CPU will come in two flavours. The AP25 version is for for smartphones so we can expect to see a few Android devices taking advantage of the added Tegra 2 power, while the T25 is designed for tablets. These CPUs are based on the ARM dual Cortex A9 processor, offering up to 1.2GHz of processing power.

The Nvidia Tegra 2 3D processor will offer 3D functionality to a range of mobile devices – which is likely to rebalance things slightly following expected media circus that will surround the Nintendo 3DS release.

With the LG Optimus Pad expected to feature support for three dimensional video and images due out later this year, the rumour mill is already speculating that this particular Android slate will ship wielding the power of the Nvidia Tegra 2 3D processor.

Even if it doesn’t, 3D is coming to a mobile device near you, sooner or later.
