HTC Android Tablet to Challenge iPad

January 21, 2011, By Christian Cawley

We’ve long expected HTC to move into the tablet market now that their handsets are of equal or superior quality to the Apple iPhone, and news of the HTC Scribe (also known as the HTC Flyer, assuming that isn’t a separate device…) being released in Q2 of 2011 in the US and UK comes as a particularly pleasant surprise.

Is a HTC Android tablet about to be announced?

Virtually no details are known at present, although a 7-inch screen is expected, as is the Android 2.3 operating system, with a likely upgrade to Android 3.0 Gingerbread as soon as it is available. Other tablets are offering motion sensors and on board cameras, but with little more than speculation at this stage, we’ll just stick to suggesting that a 3G radio is quite likely.

HTC devices don’t usually come cheap, however, but given their expertise in developing quality handsets with an attractive design these HTC tablets will probably be in the same price range as the Apple iPad. This is in sharp contrast to the Motorola Xoom which is expected to retail at around £700 – far high than a more powerful laptop.

One thing is for sure – with HTC entering the tablet market, any tablet that they release is likely to turn out to be one of the most popular devices available.
