Asahi Dragontrail Glass Unveiled; To Rival the Corning Gorilla Glass (Video)

January 21, 2011, By Leo Xavier

Asahi Glass has unveiled its latest product that it is calling the “Dragontrail”, which is a super-strong cover for gadgets, and it’s being claimed that it is six times stronger than conventional glass. The new product is expected to be a strong rival to all the other products on the market including Corning’s Gorilla Glass.

As you might already know, the Gorilla Glass is the market leader when it comes to screen covers for the latest gadgets.

The Gorilla Glass, which was introduced in 2008, is an ultra-strong glass, and is used by more than 20 major brands in about 200 million phones and mobile devices. Some of the major companies such as Samsung, LG and Motorola are among Corning’s clients.

But now, it appears that the company might have to face a strong opponent in the future, Asahi’s Dragontrail.

The Dragontrail is ultra-strong, scratchproof, can take random drops, and features a beautiful, pristine finish.

As you can see in the video, the glass is being tested by scratching it with a car key, hitting it with a hammer and a 3 point bend test (don’t try those on your current screen). It can bend and withstand 60kg of direct pressure.

Asahi has not revealed a timetable for production but says that it hopes to receive about $360 million in revenue from the glass by next year.
