BestBuy to Discourage Customers from Buying Verizon iPhone 4; Leaked Document Says So

January 20, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

This might look like somebody has gone bonkers! A retailer trying to dissuade potential customers from buying a particular phone could seem crazy, right. But then, that is exactly what BestBuy is doing. The retailer has directed employees to discourage customers from buying a Verizon iPhone 4!

An internal document with the instructions has been leaked, and guys at GearLive have got hold of that.  We have reproduced the document alongside, and it is clear that BestBuy won’t be selling the Verizon iPhone 4 at all.

The instructions in the internal document also mean that BestBuy employees will now be urging you to buy other smartphones other than the Verizon iPhone 4.  So, don’t look for the phone to be displayed on the BestBuy pages when the device finally launches. If you go looking for the phone there, we are sure you might have to hear the employees tell you not to buy the phone.

The internal document, on closer look, also lists down statements bashing the Verizon iPhone.  BestBuy lambasts the carrier for focusing only on 4G while displaying their ware at the CES 2011 in Las Vegas. They go on to add that though Verizon’s LTE network is currently up and running in 38 markets and many 4G phones will launch in the coming months, the iPhone is only a 3G device. We just wonder why BestBuy is targeting the device on Verizon.

Meanwhile, BGR has joined issue with the news, saying that the paragraphs on the leaked document have been lifted by BestBuy and used without any change whatsoever. We are left wondering as to why the retailer has resorted to such inane tactics.
