Cannon Fodder Returns!

January 18, 2011, By Christian Cawley

Classic retro tactical action game Cannon Fodder is set for a 21st century update thanks to GFI, news likely to stun 16-bit veterans into a frenzy of excitement!

Cannon Fodder 3 will be released for PC and Xbox 360

Work on Cannon Fodder 3 actually began in 2003, with the intended platform being the PlatStation 2. Reports in 2005 when the project folded revealed that the game had reached an advanced stage.

Little is known about Cannon Fodder 3 at present, other than the welcome news that the game will feature weather effects, change of time, destructible environment, physical water and even missions in outer space.

Originally released in 1993 (with a sequel in 1994) Cannon Fodder was a popular game by Sensible Software, whose other titles included the legendary Sensible Soccer. With a tagline of “War has never been so much fun” and a basic aim of completing a mission and utilising a top-down isometric view, the cartoon execution of the game painted over the harsh realities of combat in what was, at heart, a cruel satire of war.

Featuring Sensible Software’s trademark wide angle isometric view and small game characters, Cannon Fodder was a staple of the 16-bit computing era, available on Amiga, Atari ST, PC, Super NES and many long-forgotten platforms. More recently versions have been made available for mobile phones.

Cannon Fodder 3 is under development by GFI, with Xbox 360 and Windows versions intended.
