At the opening day of the BlackBerry DevCon Asia, RIM has announced the arrival of the new BlackBerry 6.1 Application Platform for BlackBerry Smartphones. Developers will be able take advantage by introducing certain new features on the 6.1 Application Platform build upon BlackBerry 6.

The company has brought the new platforms with tools/APIs that include Magnetometer / Digital compass APIs, Open GL-ES 2.0, Window API (overlay native app surfaces), Event-based geo-fencing location APIs, and Enhancement to barcode API’s for additional formats and custom decoding.

It is also known that the BlackBerry Developer Tools 6.1 will be made available soon for download. The company is expecting the developers to work with the new tools to make the release of BlackBerry 6.1 real during the next quarter or two.

It seems that RIM is continuing to develop the traditional BlackBerry OS along with the moves that are aimed only for the Blackberry Tablet OS featured on the PlayBook. The Smartphones featuring the BlackBerry 6 is expected to be complemented by the BlackBerry 6.1 update, but we can’t be completely sure about it.

These new statements from the company can be some strong indication towards the possibility of the OS to be featured on the generation of BlackBerry Smartphones. They have reportedly stated that the BlackBerry Smartphones will be based on the QNX-based operating system found in the PlayBook during some time in near future.
