iPad to Lose Home Button?

January 13, 2011, By Christian Cawley

It has been a long time coming, but it seems that Apple have successfully found a way around the Home button on the iPhone and iPad – leading to the success of Steve Jobs’ vision of a buttonless device.

A buttonless iPad 2 is coming...Already staff at Apple are testing out buttonless iPads with the iPad 2 looking like the first device to find itself “homeless”.

So how would a user find their way back to the iPad (or iPhone, when the next generation model is released) Home screen? It seems that Apple have designed a useful finger gesture to be “written” onto the device display, providing a way to switch back to the Home screen and switch apps.

Removing the last vestiges of physical, tactile human interface is a brave step, however. It is fair to say that the iPad and iPhone themselves are not likely to suffer too much from a lack of support from users with accessibility requirements. However the status of these devices as examples of perfect design will clearly influence the designers of other devices where the accessibility needs might not be so closely observed.
