BYD S6DM 4WD Dual-Mode Electric SUV Unveiled in Detroit

January 12, 2011, By Leo Xavier

BYD has unveiled its new hybrid SUV, the S6DM, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. BYD says that the company’s new vehicle is the “world’s first independent 4WD dual-mode electric SUV”, which is a title that might belong to Lexus’ RX.

The vehicle is 4WD powered by 2 engines, a small electric motor delivering a feeble 14 hp (10 kW) to the front wheels and a 2000 cc, 102 hp (75 kW) petrol engine attached to the rear wheels. The transmission is 6 speed automatic with the help of a dual-clutch system.

Despite the “Dual-Mode” moniker, the company says the system offers three driving modes including electric only, hybrid gasoline-electric and gasoline engine only.

At normal speeds, the vehicle can operate in its all-electric mode, with the electric motor (M2) propelling the rear wheels.

The SUV can be driven in an all electric mode for 38 miles (60 Km) or with the petrol engine for 311 miles (500 Km).

It was announced that the S6DM is amongst the models being considered for the US market. At the event, the company said that the brand’s US launch will happen sometime in the first quarter of 2012.

(Alex Ion is at the NAIAS venue on an invitation by Ford and is floating through the Detroit venue among the sexy models (not the babes, silly). He is so impressed that he hasn’t found time to write about them. We are sure he will soon sit down and write about what he saw there. Look forward to some amazing images and videos too. Stay tuned!)
