Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell Unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show

January 11, 2011, By Leo Xavier

Mercedes has stolen the 2011 Detroit Auto Show with its new prototype SLS AMG E-cell. The new eco friendly car has a whopping 526hp with 649 lb-ft of torque @ 0 rpm, yes that’s right, courtesy of four electric motors.

It does 0-62mph in four seconds and 0-130mph under 12 seconds and all this without any vibration and in sheer silence. This car is a giant leap in the world of super cars powered by alternative fuels.

The SLS features four driving modes; comfort, where only 40% of the motor’s power is used; sport, uses only 60% of the power and the sport+ mode which is the most aggressive of all using the whole power of the motors with an instant throttle response.

An additional manual mode is provided which is equal to the sport+ mode with the exception of regenerative braking. The new vehicle also features four options for regenerative braking.

The car boasts a new instrument cluster with a 9 inch LCD touch screen and is automatic with the driver needing only to push buttons in the centre console to change between Park, Drive and Reverse.

SLS is an AWD providing slingshot like acceleration. Mercedes says that the SLS AMG E-cell will be coming to dealerships by 2013.

(Alex Ion is at the NAIAS venue on an invitation by Ford and is floating through the Detroit venue among the sexy models (not the babes, silly). He is so impressed that he hasn’t found time to write about them. We are sure he will soon sit down and write about what he saw there. Look forward to some amazing images and videos too. Stay tuned!)
