What’s in the Windows Phone 7 Update?

January 10, 2011, By Christian Cawley

Just a matter of months after it was launched to a big fanfare, Windows Phone 7 is about to receive its first update this month.

Or is it next?

In truth, no one quite knows just yet when the update is coming. Indications from the CES event were that it would definitely be in Q1 (probably February), and the official Windows Phone 7 pages at Microsoft.com have recently had the link to a “January update” removed.

While February seems the most likely time for the updates, Microsoft have also confirmed just what owners of the new mobile platform will be getting:

Copy and paste – the Windows Phone development team have added an easy to use copy and paste tool which, rumour has it, was ready for the platform’s original launch.

Marketplace search – thanks to the 5500 apps that are currently available, the initial search function isn’t good enough, so the update features an update to this.

Faster game and app launch/resume – although welcome, the use of the word “resume” confirms that there is no multi-tasking in Windows Phone 7. But does there need to be?

Whenever the update arrives, Windows Phone 7 users will be able to automatically download it over-the-air via Wi-Fi.
