Toyota 2012 Prius v Makes NAIAS Debut; Gears Up for Summer Roll Out (Video)

January 10, 2011, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) is seeing many a new model being showcased. And, among them the ones that seem to charm audiences happen to be the ones that are set to roll out of some major companies. One car we like among the ones on show now is the sub brand of the Prius that Toyota has lined up.

Being called the 2012 Prius v, the details now available are a bit sketchy. But then, we know Toyota, as is their practice, has designed the 2012 Prius v with the ‘growing families with active lifestyles’ in mind.

An MPV, the 2012 Prius v comes with Prius like features under the hood. We mean, it has a 98 hp (73 kW / 99 PS) 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that will be backed up by an 80 hp (60 kW / 81 PS) electric motor and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack.  The hybrid technology will enable a combined output of 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS). This arrangement will help the Prius v to boast of an estimated fuel economy rating of 42 mpg city / 38 mpg hwy, and we feel that is something of a first we have ever seen.

Akin to the earlier standard model, the Prius v also comes with a fairly large size, measuring 181.7 inches long, 69.9 inches wide and 62.0 inches tall. Further, it will also come with standard 16-inch alloy wheels as in the earlier case.  The wheel base measures 109.4 inches, and that could mean that the Prius v will have some extra bit of legroom and a 34.3 cubic feet space for cargo.

We said sketchy details because we have not yet been given access to what will come in the interiors. From what is known, Toyota has thrown in its new Entune multimedia system, a Panoramic View moonroof, LED headlamps, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and an Advanced Parking Guidance System. Now, we do expect all that in a new generation Toyota, don’t we?

We will have to wait till only Summer this year to see Toyota roll out the 2012 Prius v to dealerships. We are sill waiting to know what is on the pricing front, though.

(Alex Ion is at NAIAS on an invitation by Ford and is floating through the Detroit venue among the sexy models (not the babes, silly). He is so impressed that he hasn’t found time to write about them. We are sure he will soon sit down and write about what he saw there. Look forward to some amazing images and videos too. Stay tuned!)
