Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb Unveiled (Video); Android Ice Cream to Arrive Soon?

January 6, 2011, By Leo Xavier

Google has demonstrated its latest Android operating system, the Android Honeycomb. The new operating system appears to be impressive, but the devices that will be running the new OS are expected to arrive only by March this year.

As you might remember, there have been a lot of rumors flying around related to whether the new operating system will be called Android 2.4 or 3.0. Well, everyone knew that it will be one among the two, and it has now been confirmed that the new OS is Android 3.0.

If you are eager to play with the new OS, you will be able to do that as soon as the new tablets that will be running it are launched on the market. As you might know, LG and Motorola have already unveiled their Android Honeycomb tablets.

The Android Honeycomb is designed particularly for tablets and devices that will be coming with larger screen sizes. The new OS seems to be quite different from the Mobile version Android, but the UI appears to be really impressive.

With the Honeycomb, you will be getting redesigned, richer and more interactive widgets. The browser looks a lot similar to the Google Chrome, with tabs that are seen at the top-most row.

You will also get the Google eBooks reader app with the same page-flipping animations that are seen on the Apple iPad, and the new Gmail app will show the message list in one pane, and the actual message in the pane next to it.

The new OS also comes with built-in Google Maps 5 with 3D interactions and offline reliability, and video chat support for Google Talk.

But from what we have seen on the Motorola Xoom, the new OS definitely needs a bit more work. So we are expecting the devices that run the new OS to hit the markets only by March 2011. But the OS still performed really well on the upcoming tablets. We are really eager to know how the final product will be like.

But the question that everyone is already asking is about the next Android OS. As you might remember, two months ago, there were rumors flying around that suggested that the OS that will be coming after Honeycomb will be known as Ice Cream.

And since the Gingerbread and Honeycomb operating systems were unveiled in a span of just three months, there is a possibility that Google might be planning to release the next OS in the very near future. We will let you know as soon as we get new info. In the meantime, you can check out the video below to take peek at Honeycomb.
