Hacker Claims Playstation 3 is Hacked for Good

January 3, 2011, By Christian Davis

Hacker George “GeoHot” Hotz, known for hacking the iPhone, has claimed that he has found the Playstation 3’s root key. What did he do next? Shared it with the world of course.

The root key is the unique code for each console letting it know that they’re about to play a legitimate game or movie. Why is this such a major impact? After people begin to experiment with the code pirated games can then be played on the console and the Playstation 3 will think it’s a retail copy.

This is no easy fix however. The use of firmware updates in an attempt to fix this could have all Playstation 3 consoles inoperable. Since the root key is basically the heart of the console, this is extremely risky.

Hacking team, fail0verflow, has released some of the Playstation 3 development tools for other hackers to tinker with.

In an interview with VG247 a PS3 developer said he was “angered” that PS3 had been so completely cracked. He also believes that this could actually be a good thing for the PS3. Thinking that it would boost sales.
