iPhone & iPad Video Chat services to be unveiled by Skype at CES 2011: Apple’s FaceTime to get some serious competition soon

December 28, 2010, By Shawn Wagnon

The past week or so has been simply horrible for Skype. They not only messed up their chat services and calling services in the most important period of the year, but apparently lost a huge number of users to rival OoVoo. That said, maybe they got many of them back on Skype and hopefully this has affected Skype’s short-term reputation more than its long term revenue. Damage control has started in full swing with free credit being given to some of the paying customers and now Skype is all set to unveil video chat for iPhone and iPad at CES 2011.

This should see for the first time a serious competitor taking on FaceTime app that Apple offers for video chat on the iPhone and iPad. While FaceTime is limited to Wi-Fi, you can use Skype’s Video Chat over both Wi-Fi and 3g networks. Skype seems to be all set and ready for the release of iPhone version of the video chat and while you can automatically use it on iPad as well, Skype is working overtime to offer something more and a tailor-made version for iPad as well.

So come CES 2011 in less than 10 days, we will watch Skype try and woo Apple consumers. Let’s hope for the sake of competition and Skype that the video chat impresses one and all!
