WikiLeaks Boss Gets Arrested in UK, Julian Assange Could be Extradited to Sweden

December 7, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been arrested by the police in London, and, the arrest has been made on charges of sexual assault. The founder of the whistle blowing website had been issued a European Union warrant but has denied that he had ever committed the crime. The arrest has been made for alleged sexual assault on two women in Sweden!

Assange will now appear at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court . Scotland Yard booked him by appointment at a London police station at 0930 GMT, and is expected to be extradited to Sweden in case the district judge rules that there is a prima facie case to be answered by Assange.

If the arrest warrant is legally correct, Assange will soon be on his way to Sweden.

It is being believed that if the court rules that the arrest warrant is valid, it would set a date for a full hearing.

However, chances are that it may take a few more weeks. Assange is likely to be permitted to raise his arguments against extradition at this stage.

Meanwhile, a Wikileaks spokesperson has said that though Assange’s arrest was an attack on media freedom, it would not stop the release of more secret files.
