Sync Windows Phone 7 and Google Mail

November 25, 2010, By Christian Cawley

With Windows Phone 7 devices you can easily sync a Windows Live/Hotmail email account and calendar or even an Exchange calendar, allowing you to keep track of all of your tasks and appointments while you’re on the move. These appointments will update the Calendar tile on your device, as well as popup as reminders. Further management of the items is possible via the Calendar tile, where you can browse in day and month view as well as add new appointments and edit ones you already have setup.

As the new mobile platform from Microsoft also features support for several other services, you might expect it to be able to sync with a Google Calendar in addition to those described above – and you would be right!

However this facility doesn’t activate automatically – you need to first setup a Google Mail account and then activate calendar syncing.

On the plus side, of course, is the fact that Windows Phone 7 doesn’t require any additional apps to sync with Google Calendar – it is all done natively!

Windows Phone 7 Google Mail Sync

Setting up a Google Mail account on your Windows Phone 7 handset is the first step to syncing your Google Calendar with your new phone.

To do this, go to Start > Settings > Email & Accounts > Add an account and select Google as your account type. In the next screen, add your Google email address and password, and click Sign In. This will then allow your Windows Phone 7 to connect to your Google account and collect your emails.

You can check the results of this by going to the Start screen, where the new email account will have been added to the bottom of the page. Google Mail operates in a similar manner to push email, just as a Windows Live/Hotmail account of Exchange email account might – so when new email arrives in your inbox on the server it is immediately synced with your Windows Phone 7 handset.

Setup Windows Phone 7 Google Calendar Sync

To setup Windows Phone 7 sync with your Google Calendar, open the Google Mail account on the Start screen. At the foot of the screen you will notice a brief trio of dots – these are ellipses, as in “…” and indicate that there is more to that menu than just the four default icons.

You can drag this menu up to reveal more commands, including the Settings screen.

In the Google Mail account Settings screen, you will see the option to set an email signature as well as a Synchronisation Settings button. This takes you to the vital screen, where you can configure your Google Mail settings, and in particular check the Content to Synchronise box for Calendar.

(Note that the same screen is available via Start > Settings > Email & Accounts.)

Click on Done (the tick box) to continue, and then go to Start > Calendar – you should see your Google Calendar items displayed in both Day and Agenda view! To tweak this or disable either calendar, drag the menu up and choose Calendars. Here you can switch your currently setup calendars on or off, as well as select a colour for your appointments!
