November 17, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

Sony has announced that it is developing a new camcorder, the “NXCAM” HD camcorder, which uses the E-mount lens system and is equipped with a Super-35mm equivalent large format CMOS sensor. The company has confirmed that this new addition to its professional NXCAM line will be available in the first half of 2011.

You might already know that the highly acclaimed “CineAlta” F35 and SRW-9000PL for high-end digital cinema production, made the company a key player in the 35mm digital cinematography business. Sony also strengthened its lineup in this category with the recent unveiling of its PMW-F3.

With this new “NXCAM” HD camcorder, the company looks to further strengthen its position in the entry-level segment by providing an affordable yet highly capable professional solution for many applications.

More features of the new camcorder are not out yet, but we do know that the new sensor will have extraordinary performance in terms of picture quality and sensitivity.

The company has also announced that the NXCAM can record video in AVCHD 1080p (60P/30P/24P or 50p/25p) or in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.

The pricing of the NXCAM is not yet announced, but we are guessing that it will be priced at somewhere around $3500, since it does not come with multiple sensors or too many built-in features.

More of its features will be announced in the future. So stay tuned to this space for more updates. In the meantime, you can provide us with your comments. What do you think about this new camcorder?

You will see a lot of videos and pictures of the NXCAM in the coming days. For now, there is a video for you to take a peek at the new camcorder. Check it out.
