Consoles Do Big Numbers with Sales NPD Numbers

Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have done great selling their consoles. With all the advertisements, quality games, and gaming bundles out, it’s no surprise that they all sold extremely well.

Here’s how they all did:

Microsoft:

  • “The Xbox 360 became the top-selling video game console in the U.S. in 2010.”
  • 325,000 units sold in October.
  • During the month, Xbox 360 secured six of the top 10 console game titles, including the top four titles overall, a feat never-before accomplished by a current-generation console. The top Xbox 360 titles included: “Fallout: New Vegas,” “Fable III,” “NBA 2K11,” “Medal of Honor,” “Halo: Reach,” and “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.” (Source: NPD Group, October 2010)
  • “Fable III” (580,000 units) launched as the #2 game in October, while “Halo: Reach” (315,000 units) continued strong sales in its first full month on the market.

Sony:

  • PS3 was the only format to enjoy month-on-month software growth.
  • Sales of PlayStation Move were up 15 per cent on the month before.
  • Press release quote: “PlayStation 3 software sales were incredibly strong in October and PS3 was the only platform that had growth in the software over September, to the tune of nearly 50 percent,” says SCEA corporate communcations director Patrick Seybold. “With next week’s launch of the industry’s most anticipated title, Gran Turismo 5, we’re sure to carry the momentum through the holidays.”

Nintendo:

  • The Nintendo DS family of systems emerged as the best-selling video game hardware in the United States in October, with more than 342,000 sold
  • “Nintendo heads into the holidays with an unmatched lineup of games featuring beloved characters including such classics as Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby and Pikachu, all brought to life in exciting new adventures.”
