Samsung Galaxy S WiFi Direct Certified; First Smartphone to Be So

November 4, 2010, By Sanjeev Ramachandran

The Samsung Galaxy S smartphone has added a new feather to its crown by becoming the first smartphone to be knighted by WiFi Alliance as WiFi Direct certified. WiFi Alliance has listed the smartphone in its WiFi Direct certification docket.

For those of you who don’t know, WiFi Direct is a certification which deals with the compatibility of a device as far as WiFi connectivity is concerned. Products with WiFi Direct certification can connect to another WiFi Direct certified device without joining a traditional home, office or hotspot network. This enables them to transfer content and share applications quickly and easily, no matter whether they are smartphones, cameras, printers or any such gadget.

As per the emerging information, many WiFi modules and chipsets are on the way to get the WiFi Direct certification, but the Galaxy S made it first.

However, many existing gadgets can follow suit, because the compatibility can be attained by implementing an approved firmware update. You can wait for more new gadgets to join the party and to enjoy the convenience of enhanced connectivity.

We will let you know as soon as we learn about the update that brings this functionality. So stay tuned.

You can check out the WiFi Alliance website to see the smartphone listed in its certification docket.
