Call of Duty: Black Ops Violence Went “Too Far”

October 23, 2010, By Christian Davis

Seems a bit strange to read that doesn’t it? Well, it’s true. As an even bigger surprise, those words came from the mouth of someone who developed it. What made the violence too much? It wasn’t the blood, gore, or profanity. It was the facial animations. All together now, “What?!”

Animation Director, Dominique Drozdz stated that the animation was too good in some places.

“There were situations going too far,” he also added. “It was a a contextual kill where you were twisting the neck. It was too much. The throat cutting [is] nasty, but that was worse.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Its not the neck twisting or the throat cutting that got to him. It was the facial expression that the character made which made him cringe. I do wish we could see those facial animations, because they sounds phenomenal. Unfortunately, it’s not going to happen.

“We’ve completely changed the way we do facial animation,” director Dave Anthony stated.

Maybe sometime down the line, we can see some videos of the facial animations. A nice comparison video of the carnage that could’ve been.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is set to release on November 9th. Better hurry up and pre-order it. It’s gonna sell quick.
