App Store to come to Mac, says Steve Jobs: Same Features and Revenue Sharing Model as with iPhone App Store

October 20, 2010, By Shawn Wagnon

Every time we start with ‘Steve Jobs says…’ we are tempted to finish the sentence with “I QUIT”. But that is the farthest thing from the truth at this point of time with Apple’s current boom. (And probably Jobs does take plenty of heat that is sometimes a bit unfair). But what Steve Jobs actually did tell us at the Mac Event is that we are soon going to see an ‘app store’ for Mac. Jobs said that the model for the Mac Apps Store will be similar to the current one used for iPhone; if not downright identical.

The news from the Mac Event has not just thrown up the expected (11.3-inch & 13.3-inch MacBook Air Models), but it has also seen Steve Jobs make another very important announcement for the Mac platform in the form of the app store for Mac. While the Laptop models will hog all the limelight for now, it might be the App Store for Mac that will be the winner in the long run by garnering revenue for Apple much like what the iPhone App Store is doing now.

Mac users can expect the same interface, same features, same revenue sharing model as the iPhone App Store and the Mac App Store itself to be out, in about 90 days. So does this mean that some awesome games are now coming to Mac users? Well, yes and no. Apparently Mr. Jobs is not too fond of games and to put it in blunt terms ‘hates’ them. (Yes, his hate list is pretty long)

So till actually the App Store for Mac comes up, it probably will be hard to predict how much of a hit it would be or how quickly it would catch on. For those who did miss out, do check out the details of the 11.6-inch MacBook Air and 13.3-inch MacBook Air.
