Android is not just limited to smartphones and tablets. Now there are some devices in between that have functionality somewhere between that of a PMP and a Tablet. Archos has been moving in on this market and their latest offering is the Archos 43 portable media player.

It is like an iPod Touch, but only better, and running on Android 2.2 . The name 43 comes from the size of its display, 4.3 inches. The touchscreen PMP packs an ARM Cortex A8 1GHz processor under the hood along with a graphic accelerator. It supports quite a lot of media file formats including AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, WMV, MPG, PS, TS, VOB, FLV, RM, RMVB, ASF, 3GP and can also playback HD videos directly. It has an HDMI output and integrated WiFi connectivity for internet access.

Also present is a 2 megapixel camera capable of recording HD video at 720p resolution as well as USB Host support for connecting third-party USB devices. The Archos 43 measures 135 x 65 x 9 mm and weighs in at 130 grams. The 16GB model is now up for preorder at Amazon for $249.99 . It is expected to ship this month.
