Yahoo! Goes Down Because of “Server Hangup”

October 15, 2010, By Alex Ion

As if Carol Bartz is not dealing with enough trouble these days, today, the frontpage of Yahoo! went down because of a “server hangup”. The company made an official announcement on Twitter, but only after people on Twitter & Facebook broke reported on the  Yahoo! outage.

Trying to access yahoo.com today lead to several error messages that include “server hangup” or “connection refused”. At least it was good to know that Yahoo! Mail (which is probably on different servers) wasn’t affected — it worked if you went directly to mail.yahoo.com.

The whole thing lasted for approximately 40 minutes, and as many have said, it’s probably the first Yahoo outage we’ve seen. Yeah we’ve seen services down, but this is probably the first time the .com goes down (or at least we don’t remember it) — anyone correct us if we’re wrong.

Yahoo spokesperson Kryssa Guntrum stated via e-mail, “For a brief period this afternoon, Yahoo.com was inaccessible to some users. We have identified the issue and are working to correct it immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might have been affected.”

The outage comes after rumors that AOL is gearing up to takeover Yahoo!, which is why we’re already hearing jokes about it.  “Maybe they took down Yahoo.com to put an AOL logo on it? Oh wait, this must be what Prince’s press conference is about! Internet’s over!”, Anil Dash said in a tweet.

Right now everything is fine at our end. Have you had or still have issues with Yahoo?
