Verizon iPhone 4 vs. Verizon iPhone 5: 10 specs and aspects that could decide the battle when released!

October 12, 2010, By Shawn Wagnon

With Windows Phone 7 Launch the battle lines have been drawn and new war zones established in the Smartphone market with Google, Microsoft and Apple all set for a hot battle over the next six months. But Apple has an ace up their sleeve – The iPhone Lineup. So when Verizon iPhone 4 and Verizon iPhone 5 do come out, which will end up being the biggest winner? Here are top 10 specs and aspects that will decide the battle between iPhone 4 vs. iPhone 5…

Which iPhone will be out in two different sizes?

It has already bee rumored that the future iPhone will come in two different sizes with the first one being smaller than the current iPhone 4 and the second having a larger screen. This really opens up a whole new market. If this happens with iPhone 5, then expect people to wait for it. If Verizon iPhone 4 is already out in 2 sizes, it could sell out fast!

Release Date and a disclosed Roadmap:

The big question still is if Verizon iPhone 4 will come out in early January next year? If it does will Apple give out a roadmap and tell us when iPhone 5 on Verizon is expected? Considering that iPhone 4 was so much better than iPhone 3GS, people will surely wait for iPhone 5 if Apple says it will come out 6 months down the line from iPhone 4’s release on Verizon.

4G LTE Support:

If Verizon is bringing out iPhone 4 in January and the network is not ready till July and hence the phone does not have 4G speeds then it is almost certain that consumers are going to hang around till iPhone 5 with 4G comes along to spend their cash.

Browsing while Talking:

If you cannot access the net and browse while you are on a voice call (that is what we here as of now), then Verizon iPhone 4 is headed for a bit of a failure. This will give iPhone 5 a huge edge and also AT&T a big thumbs up. Another essential aspect while you wait to make the choice…

CDMA Support:

We know that Qualcomm chips around that CDMA is a certain shoe-in for iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless. But how good will it actually be and will Verizon take ‘a handset’s time’ to learn and improve on CDMA support for iPhone? If CDMA fumbles then people will frown all too quickly.

Exclusive Features and upgrades:

For a CDMA Verizon iPhone 4 Apple needs to have a whole separate support system, maybe tweak its apps and of course features like the camera will be once again under scrutiny. With Nokia N8 already challenging iPhone 4 in such aspects Verizon and Apple better pick themselves up in time. If Verizon’s first iPhone is not too improved from the current one, then expect everyone to kill time till ‘5’ arrives.

Battery Performance:

News coming in is that CDMA-based iPhone 4 battery is not very energy-savvy and drains pretty fast. If that is the case, maybe they can fix it in iPhone 5- that is what we would think!

International Use and Unlocking aspects:

Okay, so Jailbreak is a huge thing for Apple iOS as we already know. Verizon might sell a lot more iPhone 4 handsets if they are compatible for usage even beyond the home market. But then if they tighten up stuff and make iPhone 5 less easily breakable then advantage to its predecessor

Will the wait end at CES?

We know Verizon has 6 4G handsets lined up for CES, is iPhone 4 one of them. Or will they never bring it out and directly go for iPhone 5? Looks unlikely considering the market potential out there. Anyway, release dates and future release plans will be the most essential aspect in this battle.

Is iPhone 5 ‘an Evolution’ or ‘a Revolution’?

This is the billion dollar question. If Verizon iPhone 5 is more than just an evolution from Verizon iPhone 4, then it will win hands down and in a huge fashion. If it is just a ‘better-evolved-less-hassle-iPhone 4’, then it just loses out big time… Without doubt.

At the end the question still is ‘To wait or not to wait’. If Verizon do a startling good job will iPhone 4 and Verizon iPhone 5 is no where in sight for the next year or so, then this battle belongs to iPhone 4.

If Verizon tell the world that they will unleash a CDMA iPhone 5 with awesome 4G support while launching iPhone 4 without the 4G, we have a winner even before the first handset hits the stores.

How do you feel about the wait? Is it Verizon iPhone 4 or Verizon iPhone 5 for you? Or is it still AT&T!!
